It does not mean that lengthening less can make the thickness of the tibia less thicker 

One of the ways that could prevent from calves getting thicker would be to wear compression stockings.  

I recommend the patients who underwent the surgery to wear the compression stockings at least for 2 years if they want to avoid the calves getting thicker
