Stature Lengthening Surgery, is it really safe?

One of the common questions that come up regarding stature lengthening surgery would be, "is it really safe"?

In this video, Dr. Lee discuss about the key components of having a successful lengthening surgery.

1. Surgeon.

  • If the osteotomy is not done properly, there can be higher chance of lack of bone regeneration and infection.
  • When fixing bone with a pin, when implanting internal and external fixators, nerve palsy can occur if nerve gets injured.
  •  If the operating room environment is not sterile, higher chance of infection.

2. Patient.

"In limb lengthening, surgery is where bone is cut and fixator is used to provide environment for bone to lengthen after the surgery. After the surgery, the bone is lengthened gradually, but not only the bone, but also the surrounding muscles and nerves have to lengthen as well. So this is what I mean by that it doesn't all depend on the doctor's good performance." - Dr. Donghoon Lee

"Guidance about how to rehabilitate well after the surgery is needed. Patient's role is to actively and diligently follow along." - Dr. Donghoon Lee

Equipment at DALRI

EOS X-Ray Imaging System
- During the treatment period, repeated x-rays and accurate measurements are required.
- Measurements of the EOS scans are very close to the real lengths.
- Exposure to radiation is very low, and pediatric hospitals over the world choose EOS for this reason.

SwimEx (Hydrotherapy)
