In-Depth Analysis of Leg Deformity (Bowleg) 2 on The Cause

The bowlegs can be caused by certain illnesses or without any special cause. There are varieties of diseases such as Blount disease, Rickets, etc. that cause bowlegs but since it’s rare cases that I won’t go over it here.

The most common cause of bowlegs is ’case with no special cause’

It means that there is no ‘disease’. If we were to analyze the alignment of leg, of course there is a problem. The ‘problem’ that cause leg deformity can be the angular deformation which the angle of bone is bent and there may be rotational deformity. Also, it may just appear to be bent without any bone deformity due to the distribution of muscles.

Now, why does this happen?

Instead of saying that deformity has formed and occurred, it’s more accurate to say that the deformity has not been corrected as one grows up. Because when we are in mother’s womb, our posture is all curled up.

This posture is also called as Buddha posture, where the calf bone maintains in a posture that gives angular deformity and feet are turned inwardly which gives rotational deformity and the posture also makes the thigh bone stay rotated. In another word, we all stay in mother’s womb with a posture that causes leg deformity.

When we first started to walk, bowlegs get worse temporarily. And as we grow up, those deformity gradually come back to a normal alignment. But if it doesn’t get corrected to the normal alignment, then the deformity is left remain.

Moreover, cultural factors, postures that comes from lifestyle can influence such changes as we grow up. Anyway, factors that causes the leg deformity are angular deformity and rotational deformity

Out of these, the angular deformity is the most common cause.

There are many cases where people who have angular deformity in tibia often has rotational deformity as well or follows with rotational deformity in femur.

Whatever the causes are, the deformity is due to the problems in bone alignment.

So, without correcting the bone itself, deformity cannot be corrected only with any type of stretching exercises or massages and so on. Non-surgical treatment such as putting on a frame will not correct the deformity. It will only pressure the joint that I do not recommend those non-surgical treatment.
